Two Mississippi Men’s Teams Reach Finals of 2016 Southern Senior Cup

 

 

Nine USTA Southern Section states sent teams to compete in the Southern Senior Cup held in Huntsville, AL June 2-5.  Mississippi Men's 75's and Men's 55's teams reached the finals of the four day competition.  South Carolina won the overall championship.  Each match is composed of 2 singles and 1 doubles match.

The MS Men's 75's team is Albert Lyle, Jackson, Don Frilo, Gulf Coast, and Lamar Hooker, Kosciusko.  MS defeated Georgia 2-1 in the first round with Albert Lyle and Don Frilot winning singles matches. MS defeated No. 1 seed South Carolina 2-1 in the second round with Don Frilot winning his singles match and teaming with Albert Lyle they won the deciding doubles match. MS lost 3-0 to North Carolina in the finals.
 
The MS Men's 55's team is Ken Koelling, Meridian, Steve Garman and Doug Hague of the Gulf Coast. MS defeated Louisiana 3-0 in the first round with all 3 matches going to a third set.  Ken and Steve won singles, and then Ken teamed with Doug to win doubles.  MS defeated South Carolina 3-0 in the second round.  Ken and Steve won their singles and then Ken teamed with Doug to win doubles. In the finals MS lost 3-0 to defending champion Georgia.  This 55's team has made the finals four consecutive years with 2 wins and 2 losses.

The MS Men's 45's team is Daryl Greenan, West Point, Christer Olsson and Teddy Viator both from Hattiesburg and Tommy Carter of the Gulf Coast.  MS defeated Alabama 2-1 in the first round with Daryl and Christer winning singles matches.  MS lost 3-0 to No. 1 seed and eventual champion, South Carolina in the second round.  The 3rd-4th playoff was rained out on Sunday.

The MS Men's 65's team is Marty Pearson, Oxford, Henry Harris, Natchez, Ron Johnson, Madison and Robert Hand of Corinth. MS lost 2-1 to Tennessee in the first round.  Marty won his singles match. Mississippi lost 3-0 to No. 1 seed Georgia in Consolation.

The MS Women's 75's team is Sibyl Child, Jackson, Ola Kuriger, Madison, and Becky Barnes of Hattiesburg.  MS lost 2-0 to Alabama in the first match and defeated Arkansas 2-0 in the consolation bracket.  Sibyl won her singles match while Ola and Becky won their doubles.  MS lost 2-1 to Georgia in their third match where Sibyl won her singles match.

MS Women's 65's team is Jeanne Moak, Jackson, Karen Summerlin, Brandon, Sandy Kees, Brookhaven, and  Diane Miles of Vicksburg.  MS lost 3-0 to Tennessee in the first round and 2-1 to Louisiana in consolation. Sandy and Diane won their doubles.

The MS Women's 55's team is Camille Soulier, Hattiesburg, Anne Culpepper and Beth Rogers of Brandon, and Sally Thompson of Jackson.  MS lost 3-0 to North Carolina in the first round, and 3-0 to Kentucky in consolation.
