Meet our Captains of the Month!
Meet Junior League Captain of the month, Taylor Berry & Adult League Captain of the Month, Mary Margaret Swedenburg!
Junior League Capain, Taylor Berry from Brookhaven says:
I first became involved with Junior Team Tennis (JTT) last summer when my oldest daughter, Flynn, joined the USTA. Seeing the enthusiasm and need for parent volunteers, I stepped up to serve as a captain. Since then, I've had the joy of captaining both the 12U and 10U JTT teams, both of which won their local leagues this season!
Living in Brookhaven with my husband, Nathan, and our two daughters, Flynn and Collins, we thoroughly enjoy watching the girls play tennis and spending quality time at the courts. Our family shares a passion for all things Disney, and we seize every opportunity to visit Disney World together!
I also love playing tennis myself; I currently captain our 18+ 4.0 team, along with mixed, tri-level, and combo seasons, which keeps me busy with 6-7 teams a year. And as a true tennis enthusiast, my favorite professional player will always be Roger Federer!
Adult League Captain, Mary Margaret Swedenburg from East Central says:
I have spent my entire life in Columbus MS. In my early married years I worked for our family business but eventually gave up the career life to raise our 3 sons. I am married to Steve, my husband of almost 35 years. We have 4 grandchildren who live in Columbus. Things I especially enjoy at this stage are my grandchildren, tennis, travel, church, and friends/family.
About 30 years ago, my husband and several close friends played and they encouraged me to start playing.
Tennis has been a gift to me. It has afforded me an outlet for exercise, sunshine, trips, memories, but mostly some of the very best friends a person could ask for. Tennis friends are THE BEST! I especially enjoy the camaraderie of my teammates and, as a captain, I also enjoy the organization and strategy of lining up the pairs.
As a captain the #1 'best practice' is good sporsmanship! To play tennis is a privilege. I always hope for my teammates and me to finish a match and for the opponents to think “they were delightful - competitive, played fair, and were nice
