Frequently Asked Questions
How are selections made?
The following finishers in the Qualifier will automatically be selected:
- Boys & Girls 10's (64 compass draw): the 4 semifinalists in the championship (main) draw & the 2 finalist in consolations – MS quota=23
- Boys & Girls 12's (128 compass draw): the 4 semifinalists in the championship (main) draw & the 2 finalists in consolations – MS quota=8
- Boys & Girls 14's-18's (160 draw): the 4 semifinalists in the championship (main) draw & the 2 finalist in consolations – MS quota =1.
Selection of the remaining players for Mississippi’s quota will be based on Southern standings immediately following the Qualifier.
What if I am unable to play in the Qualifier?
Waivers will be considered for medical reasons, family crisis or unavoidable circumstances. Players who fall in this category will be placed at the bottom of the Mississippi alternate list.
How will I know if I have been selected?
The selection lists will be posted on www.mstennis.com as soon as possible after the selection has been made. All applicants should check the individual tournament site for selections.
What if I am an alternate in the 10's or 12's?
Once you have been chosen as an alternate in the 10's or 12's you could be selected to the tournament if someone from Mississippi’s selected list is unable to go and notifies the tournament before the draw is made. After the draw is made, Southern will order the alternates, who will be asked to fill in based on that list when openings become available. It is your responsibility to check the website.
What if I am an alternate in the 14’s-18’s?
Once you have been chosen as an alternate from Mississippi, you are then put into the Southern list with the alternates from the other 8 states. The MTA is not responsible for which alternates are chosen to enter the main draw. To find out if you have been chosen to play in the main draw of the Southern Closed, you should check on the tournament website of the appropriate age group that you are qualifying for after noon on Tuesday, June 14th. Remember it is your responsibility to check the website. No one will call or email you.
After the quotas are filled by the states there are 14 spots in the 14’s, 16’s & 18’s draws. Southern reserves these spots for players who have a high Southern standing, but perhaps not as good state standing (if that criteria is used) or did not do so well in the Qualifier. The 14 alternates are taken in before the draw has been made. After the draw is made, the remaining alternates maybe asked in if players have to drop out before the tournament begins. So, if you are an alternate, keep watching your appropriate Southern website.
