Spotlight on Kaleb Phillips – Arthur Ashe Essay Contest Winner
Recently, Kaleb Phillips won the Arthur Ashe Essay Contest for the state of Mississippi, earning an all-expenses-paid trip (for himself and one parent) to the Atlanta Cup. This distinguished honor highlights his tenacity, growth, and the promise he holds as a young leader.
At just sixteen, the DeSoto Central High School junior has already shown remarkable resilience and determination. Diagnosed early with Developmental Delay, ADHD, and ADD, Kaleb faced significant academic challenges but refused to let those setbacks define him. His turning point came through Family Biz Builder, an organization dedicated to helping children strengthen their academic performance, life skills, and tennis development. With mentorship and structured study strategies, Kaleb made strides both in the classroom and on the court. Additional guidance from Coach Lance Hickman and the Windward Academy team further fueled his transformation, taking him from a struggling student to an honor roll achiever.
Anchored by his faith, family, and mentors, Kaleb continues to embrace each new challenge with confidence, perseverance, and the belief that he can achieve anything he sets his mind to.
Kaleb shares his own reflections:
“I really am thankful and grateful for being selected to go on this trip. With great determination and hard work, it has paid off. Even though I reached for the moon, I landed amongst the stars.”
Executive Director Peggie A. Henderson remarks:
“Kaleb’s NJTL Essay Contest win shows what hard work and character can achieve. We celebrate his success today and always!”
Kaleb is a shining example of determination and passion for long-term goals, and we are proud to celebrate his achievements.
